Are you ready to shift from “ASAP” to the “In the Right Time” Mindset?

The anxiousness you feel when things don’t go your
way, is often rooted in expectations about what
needs to happen and by when.

This might start at the beginning of your day and
build throughout the morning, making it hard to
focus at work and leaving you feeling like nothing
is getting done.  Or it might start toward the end
of your work day and leave you in such a wound-up
state of mind that makes it hard to go to sleep at
night.

And since you live in a world that is pushing you
to get more done faster, without concern for the
quality of the experience or the outcome, it’s
really hard to keep those expectations in check.

It might be time for you to shift from an ASAP
state of mind to an “in the right time” state of
mind.

You probably know the letters “ASAP” refer to As
Soon as Possible. And the ASAP state of mind is
all about go-go-go. You rush forward throughout
your day from the moment your mind wakes up. As a
result you expect everyone else to operate in this
way too (including your colleagues, your children,
the other drivers on the road, etc), which feeds
into a really chaotic, crazed, frenetic, and
adrenaline-filled whirl of activity that often
spins you completely out of control.

Where in this picture is there room to breathe?
To slow down and appreciate all you have in your
life? To check-in with your life path to see if
you’re on track toward YOUR vision, and not what
others expect of you?

Take my client Judy. When she landed in Bali, she
immediately began to shift her state of mind.
Here’s what she said…

“The thing that was the most positive for me was
the slowness of my breath and the slower pace I
was moving to and the peace that came from walking
away from all of the chaos and stress that I left
behind in Philadelphia. It felt like a layer was
peeled off of me and I left it at the airport. And
the good news is, it stayed at the airport, the
stressful situations were still there when I
returned, but they didn’t affect me the same way.”

What is an “in the right time” state of mind?
It’s rooted in the culture of Bali that allows for
deep knowing that everything happens in the
perfect moment. In fact, you could equate the Bali
state of mind with this new state of mind – where
you know that everything happens “in the right
time.”

There is no need to control every little detail
of your day. You can trust that what is happening
is perfect in each moment.

This relaxing of the Western wound-up mindset
that spins you into a tight little ball of
stressed out unhappiness comes naturally with when
you embrace the “in the right time” mindset.

I first began to experience this shift after
visiting Jamaica, Eritrea, Tanzania, and India.

Each eye-opening culture gave me an even greater
appreciation of slowing down and how powerful it
can be.

But it wasn’t until immersing myself in the
Balinese culture that I felt the significant and
long-lasting shift to the “in the right time” way
of living.

And each return visit is like getting an update
on a vaccination that boosts your immunity to the
strain and weary ASAP way of working and living –
at least for a few years until you need another
shot in the arm. ☺

Can you make this shift without going to Bali?

Yes, in part. I experienced a partial shift
during the time in which I was practicing yoga
and/or meditating daily for at least 60 minutes
each day.. Any breath-centered or energy-centered
practice which requires you to pause and set-aside
the busy-ness of daily life can help you make this
transition.

However…

I don’t know about you, but at this stage of my
current life—running my own business, raising
two young boys, and living in the modern world, I
don’t have 60 minutes each day to practice yoga
and/or meditate anymore. Oh, how I wish I did!

Instead, I have to intentionally extract myself
from my regular life circumstances to get a super
dose of an all-encompassing culture that lives and
breathes the “in the right time” mindset. And that
for me is Bali.

If you’ve made attempt after attempt to recharge,
refocus and re-energize yourself, but found
yourself back where you started, day after day,
month after month, year after year… Then maybe
it’s time for you too to intentionally extract
yourself from your regular life circumstances to
get a super dose of this new way of working and
living.

In my opinion, it’s one of the secrets to
rebooting your mind, body and spirit to come into
alignment with how YOU really want to live.

I invite you to join the rest of us who are going
to Bali this Fall.

Could a cleanse boost your performance? (Part II)

Today I share 4 simple steps on How to Cleanse.

In Part I, I talked about the 6 signs you should
look for to know if it’s time for a cleanse.

But what I didn’t talk about was how to cleanse
or that you can cleanse by doing more than just
changing what you eat.

If you’re not sure why you should bother with a
cleanse, check out my first post then click the back
button to come back here and learn more.

How to Cleanse?

Step 1: Identify the areas of your life that are
cluttered and congested. In Part I, I focused
primarily on the body. But, maybe your performance
would benefit most by cleansing or decluttering in
one or more of the following areas:

  • Your mind? Thought processes? Mindset practices?
  • Your body? Exterior? Interior?
  • You physical environment? Home? Office? Car? Work bag?
  • Your digital environments? Email in box? File storage? Programs/software? Voice-mail?
  • Relationships? Personal? Professional?
  • Business practices? Back-office operations? Customer/client interfacing practices? Communications? Marketing? Sales? Supply management? Other?
  • Your Calendar? Appointments? Type/location of calendar? Task management?
  • Your “To do” list? Size? Location? Tracking?
  • Other? You fill in the blank: _________ .

Step 2: Make a list of the top 3 things that are
draining your energy.

Step 3: Pick your top energy “drainer” and go to
work. Cleanse, declutter, delete, recalibrate, refresh,
organize… whatever is needed to shed the old
decayed, congested energy and invite in new,
refreshed, reinvigorating energy.

Step 4: Take a deep breath and appreciate all
your hard work.

Step 5: Repeat until you’ve tackled your top 3
things and experienced a boost in your
performance.

Not sure how to go about tackling Steps 3 and 4?
Stay tuned.

I’ll show you how simple and enjoyable it can be
to boost your performance by decluttering key
areas of your life by DOING LESS!

In Part III of this series on Cleansing, I’ll
share simple tips for implementing a Springtime

How you lose weight without dieting or exercising more

It’s simple

Though not necessarily easy

It doesn’t require any special pills or
supplements
Nor the purchase of a special book or DVD

Nor is it sexy

So for all these reasons
It’s not a raging fad

But it is the longest known
Approach to dieting and weight loss
That I know of

It’s called mindful eating

And it requires two things:
One – you
Two – your attention

The first is pretty easy to come by
Since you are usually with yourself

The second is not so easy these days
With your complex “to do” list
And so many devices beeping and distracting you

But once you get your attention on board
It’s pretty simple

Here’s how it works:
You, alone with you, and whatever you are eating
Focusing all your senses and your wandering mind
on eating

(you’ll soon discover why, in yoga, we call it a
monkey mind – swinging here and there, up to all
kinds of mischief!)

Pay attention to what you notice
The data that each of your senses is gathering in

And respect what you learn

Starving? Interesting. Take a bite, of course,
but ask yourself why did you wait so long to eat?

Don’t like the flavor? Don’t eat it then. Period.

Not hungry? Don’t eat. Enough said.

Full already? Great. Stop eating and move on.

Adding seasoning (or dressing or whatever) out of
habit? Really want it?

Swallowing bites whole without chewing? Why in
such a rush?

Eating for reasons other than hunger? First,
welcome to the club. Second, take note of why and
pause. Breathe into what you are observing and
write it down. Then, move on and do something else
– but don’t eat.

Mindful eating.
Yes, it is eating.
But, it’s different this way, being mindful of why and when and how.
And – most important – respecting what you learn
and heeding that wisdom.

In this way
I lost weight
Without dieting
Or exercising more.

And as a result I felt:
-Lighter
-Freer
-More in control
-Better about myself
-More energized
-Comfortable in my skin and in my clothes
-Clearer in my thinking
-More focused and inspired about work

The old way is dieting

The new way is mindful eating

If you decide to give it a go
And try an honest experiment
With mindful eating
I guarantee you will feel some or all of this way
too
And maybe lose weight as a by-product of getting
to know more about your relationship with food

But if implementing this approach is more
challenging than you expected
And you would like support
breaking through to the other side
Then sounds like it’s time for you to meet with me

My son's favorite "subject" at school is Choice

My son's favorite "subject" at school is Choice

My son’s favorite “subject” at school is Choice.

It’s the only part of his day where he gets to play with whatever toys he wants to, and decide whether or not he wants to do it alone or with other kids in his class. He likes it as much or even better than recess.

Some days he plays with Kinex and makes a toy spaceship. Other days he works out a drama with his friends and enacts a play. Each day is different.

And the best days of all are the days where, for whatever reason, there are two periods of Choice. Oh, the joy! He openly shares about how great those days are without us having to prod him for details about his day at school.

The real reason he likes Choice is that, like most of us, he’s in charge and he gets to say and do what he wants.

In essence, he feels like he is in control.

We human beings, we have free will. So we like the idea that we can be in charge and
be in control.

And even though it’s mostly an illusion (and by “it”, I mean control), one wonderful way we can feel in control is to choose what we do with our lives.

But, the Old Way of Living and Working — the one we’re used to (because we’re in the habit of doing it this way) — is to agree to continue with how things already are, feeling that we can’t make a
change.

It’s often living and working in a model that was constructed based on what we thought we “should” be doing. What we were raised to think was the “right” or “best” way of living. The right kind of job, making the right kind of money, living in the right neighborhood, driving the right car, etc, etc.

Sound familiar? How’s it working for you? And what about what YOU want for your life?

The good news is, you can make a choice to switch to the New Way of Living and Working.

In this case, it’s about saying yes to what makes you happy. It’s about saying yes to saying no. By that I mean, letting go of the shoulds. Letting go of what others think is right for you. It’s about giving yourself permission to let go of external expectations and obligations. To, in essence, do less and feel better about doing less for others so you can do more for you.

No, it’s not about becoming a hermit or letting people down. It’s not about hiding in a corner or pretending you’re sick to give yourself a break.

It’s about acknowledging that you are a human being with free will. And you have the gift of choice. Wonderful choice.

By doing so, you will be choosing to live your life in the flow, without resistance and without stress. By living a life of choices that are in alignment with what you envision for your ideal life, you’ll be in a state of happiness and ease and satisfaction.

So, what Choice will you make today to live your life? (Not someone else’s idea of what your life “should” look like.)

How will Choice shape your New Way of Living and Working today?
