How you lose weight without dieting or exercising more

It’s simple

Though not necessarily easy

It doesn’t require any special pills or
supplements
Nor the purchase of a special book or DVD

Nor is it sexy

So for all these reasons
It’s not a raging fad

But it is the longest known
Approach to dieting and weight loss
That I know of

It’s called mindful eating

And it requires two things:
One – you
Two – your attention

The first is pretty easy to come by
Since you are usually with yourself

The second is not so easy these days
With your complex “to do” list
And so many devices beeping and distracting you

But once you get your attention on board
It’s pretty simple

Here’s how it works:
You, alone with you, and whatever you are eating
Focusing all your senses and your wandering mind
on eating

(you’ll soon discover why, in yoga, we call it a
monkey mind – swinging here and there, up to all
kinds of mischief!)

Pay attention to what you notice
The data that each of your senses is gathering in

And respect what you learn

Starving? Interesting. Take a bite, of course,
but ask yourself why did you wait so long to eat?

Don’t like the flavor? Don’t eat it then. Period.

Not hungry? Don’t eat. Enough said.

Full already? Great. Stop eating and move on.

Adding seasoning (or dressing or whatever) out of
habit? Really want it?

Swallowing bites whole without chewing? Why in
such a rush?

Eating for reasons other than hunger? First,
welcome to the club. Second, take note of why and
pause. Breathe into what you are observing and
write it down. Then, move on and do something else
– but don’t eat.

Mindful eating.
Yes, it is eating.
But, it’s different this way, being mindful of why and when and how.
And – most important – respecting what you learn
and heeding that wisdom.

In this way
I lost weight
Without dieting
Or exercising more.

And as a result I felt:
-Lighter
-Freer
-More in control
-Better about myself
-More energized
-Comfortable in my skin and in my clothes
-Clearer in my thinking
-More focused and inspired about work

The old way is dieting

The new way is mindful eating

If you decide to give it a go
And try an honest experiment
With mindful eating
I guarantee you will feel some or all of this way
too
And maybe lose weight as a by-product of getting
to know more about your relationship with food

But if implementing this approach is more
challenging than you expected
And you would like support
breaking through to the other side
Then sounds like it’s time for you to meet with me

Final Tip to Get Your Holiday Zen On (hint: focus on what's working well)

Happy New Year!

Here it is. Your final tip of the holiday season
before the New Year hits.

It’s simple, yet perhaps not easy. And it’s
something I’ve been doing this past week.

Tip #6 to Get Your Holiday Zen On Without Missing
Out on the Fun:

Keep what is working well for you, and get rid of
(or address) the rest.

This tip brings to mind something wise my yoga
teacher once said to me: the only way to get
around something that is bothering you is to go
right through it.

So, if in the process of making a list of what’s
working well and what’s not working well, you come
across something that has been bugging you
forever. (And those things are the biggest energy
drainers.) Then, perhaps it’s time to address it
head on. That’s right. To get around it, you have
to go through it.

My husband and I tackled some clutter yesterday,
in a whirlwind of activity while our youngest was
napping, and now the whole house feels lighter and
nicer looking. In fact, my body feels lighter,
more energized, and in general things feel more
manageable.

What’s on your list?

It Gets Better With Age

“It Gets Better With Age”

These were the words ironed-on with felt letters
on my mom’s t-shirt when I was a kid. I read these
words with a deep desire to understand what it
meant. All the grown-ups would tell me was
“someday you’ll understand.”

Well, now I do! It does get better with age.

I’m quickly approaching my 40th birthday — the
same age my mom was when she wore that t-shirt.
And I’m not sure I’m interpreting the “it” in that
statement the same way those grown-ups did, but
here’s what I know.

What is better overall is my understanding of the
world at large. My knowledge of my body and what’s
best for it — whether it be types of exercise,
different foods, how much sleep I need (when my
boys let me sleep), what times of day my libido is
strongest, and so on.

I encourage my clients to create a “platinum
practices” list of what they know for sure best
supports their personal performance. On my list
are things like starting the day with something
warm — whether it be lemon ginger tea, or
steel-cut oat groats. On baby days (days when I’m
home with my youngest), allowing myself to nap or
put my feet up and watch a cooking show. On work
days, building in breaks between clients to eat a
nourishing lunch and stretch my legs. And so on.

What’s on your list of platinum practices?

What ways of living, being, eating, exercising,
working, relating, serve you best in performing at
your optimum level?
